Burnaby, BC – Artisan Farmers’ Market Society, a member run BC Registered Non-Profit Society which operates the popular Burnaby Farmers’ Market as well as farmers’ markets in West Vancouver and North Vancouver, has announced the extension of its Burnaby Market season until at least Christmas, possibly longer. The Burnaby Farmers’ Market is held in the Burnaby City Hall parking lot, every Saturday.

Mr. Bernie Glemas, Chair of the Society, said “Burnaby residents, vendors and market shoppers have been asking for a longer season so they can buy locally grown, baked and made foods, crafts and products throughout the year, without having to travel to winter markets in other cities”.

Ms. Maria Lennox, Burnaby Market Manager, told us “After receiving several requests from market goers and vendors, and having learned that some of the usuals farmers’ markets in nearby cities were not going to operate this winter, I started poling and received positive feedback about the idea. Organic produce vendors like Snowy Mountain Organics committed to vending at the market though November and December. As well, protein farmers like Rockweld Farm,  with their Free Range Chicken, and Redl’s Home Grown Beef will be at the market two to three times per month.

“Farmers’ Markets like ours are becoming more and more popular as people seek out healthier foods and lifestyles, so we appreciate the need to serve Burnaby residents into the winter season. The Society’s Board of Directors was unanimous in its support for the extended market season and the City of Burnaby was quick to give the plan their approval. Our Society helps support over a hundred local startups and small businesses over the regular market season by providing them a regular, cost effective, market where the public can easily access them, sample their products and make purchases. Access to the market and the support of the local public is important to these local businesses” said Mr. Glemas. “even with the popularity of the market, there are still a lot of Burnaby residents who don’t know there is a market in their own city, which is one of the reasons we will be publicizing a weekly shopping spree draw as part of the markets promotion.”

Ms Lennox noted, “Hundreds of local residents attend the Burnaby Market on a regular basis. Many tell us they’ve tried markets in nearby cities but prefer Burnaby Farmers’ Market citing the mix of vendors, ample parking, its quiet treed setting and its convenient location, only three minutes from the Trans Canada Highway. It’s common for us to see familiar faces walking their dog and kids through the market, stopping for a fresh chocolate almond croissant and specialty cappuccino coffee and sitting at the community table to listen to the live musical entertainers before they pick up local foods to take home and cook for dinner. We expect people will also be drawn to the shop the market for local crafts as the holiday gift buying season approaches”.

The Burnaby Farmers Market’s Winter Season will be held every Saturday, from 10am to 2pm, through to Christmas, and possibly beyond.
